After highly regarded releases on their own Intangible Cat label, ((Cave)) Recordings, and Denmark's Metaphysical Circuits, another friendly oddity of electronic-organic multi-aesthetic experimentation has arrived. This self-titled album collects 9 (counting the 20 minute download-only bonus track) specially selected pieces from the heap of material they recorded between 2004 and 2007. As per their standard procedure thus far, these tracks have been sculpted from their original improvised form into more delicate and intensely textural states. The quadruplet draws from a varied sound pool. Strongly informed by 80's industrial / cassette culture artists and creation methods, they mingle the sensibilities of home-tapers with their love for more current electronic artists and technologies. Dark strange worlds of dreamy ambient space slide into uplifting beat-driven minimalist-melody. Organic guitar and percussion sounds are placed against glitchy beats and otherworldly synth signals. Field recordings and random sound bytes fill hollowed niches. The group is devoted to experimenting, but they generally seek to engineer their experiments toward the more accessible and structured side of that paradigm. That being said, overtly atonal or harsh creations are still within the realms of possibility for the group. On the present disc, we have the instrumental electronic ear-candy version of Amalgamated, for fans of experimental music with catchy leanings. There is more to come for this type of listener, and for others.
Some words regarding Amalgamated:
“Behind the melodies there is a distinctly hallucinogenic sensibility that gives the proceedings just the right amount of edge to keep things off balance and interesting.”
-Wonderful Wooden Reasons
“...some intelligent music, of psychedelica, exotica, weirdness, musique concrete, dance beats...”
“Excellent music all around...”
“These are the grandchildren of Nurse With Wound...”
“The sound is dreamy yet fluid with this odd combination of styles much reminding me of acts like Plaid, early Aphex Twin or Autechre while at the same time not being quite as complex or technical as those projects.”
